In A MAGICAL SUBSTANCE FLOWS INTO ME begibt sich die Filmemacherin auf die Spuren des deutsch-jüdischen Musikethnologen Robert Lachmann (1892-1939) und seines Radioprogramms „Oriental Music“, das er in den 1930er Jahren in Palästina realisierte. Achtzig Jahre später trifft Jumana Manna die Mitglieder aus jenen Communities, mit denen Lachmann damals fürs Radio aufgenommen hatte, um ein Archiv musikalischer Traditionen in Jerusalem aufzubauen. Sie besucht Musiker_innen – kurdische, marokkanische und jemenitische Jüd_innen, Samaritaner_innen, Mitglieder ländlicher und urbaner palästinensischer Communities, Beduin_innen und christliche Kopt_innen – und hört sich mit ihnen Lachmanns Aufzeichnungen an. Die Gespräche und die Aufführungen der Instrumentalist_innen und Sänger_innen machen komplexe Akzentverwebungen erfahrbar, die Lachmanns Kategorisierungen sprengen.

In A MAGICAL SUBSTANCE FLOWS INTO ME the filmmaker follows the footsteps of the Jewish-German ethnomusicologist Robert Lachmann (1892-1939) and the concept of his radio program “Oriental Music,” which was aired by the Palestine Broadcasting Service in the 1930s. Eighty years later, Jumana Manna meets in the film with members of the communities with whom Lachmann had recorded for his program in the effort to establish an archive of vernacular musical traditions in Jerusalem. Manna visits musicians – Kurdish, Moroccan and Yemenite Jews, Samaritans, members of the rural and urban Palestinian communities, Bedouins and Coptic Christians – and listens to Lachmann’s recordings with them. The resulting discussions and the singers’ and instrumentalists’ performances reveal the complexity of interwoven accents that defy Lachmann’s categorizations.
